From Jarrow’s Tower traces the history of St Bede’s RC Church in Jarrow over the last century and a half. Featuring lots of rare and previously unpublished photographs, the book tracies the roots of Jarrow from monastic times and the religious community founded by Benedict Biscop in the seventh century. The book also takes a fresh look at the life of Jarrow saint and scholar the Venerable Bede and investigates the town’s industrial roots, including an account of Springwell Paper Mill, captured in an evocative early photograph.
